The Centre for Value Education of Devki Devi Jain Memorial college for women, Ludhiana organized a free Medical check-up in collaboration with the Rotract club on February 8, 2020. This free medical check-up was open for students, teaching and non teaching staff of the college. A large number of people from outside the college also availed themselves of this free medical check. 

This Medical check-up included the Blood Pressure level and Bone Density check up. Mr. Ajit Kumar Yadav B.M.D Technician from Mumbai and Mr. Sanjeev Parmar ME/ALKEM were the experts hired by the Rotract club, RCL Greater. The experts gave the advice to everyone regarding the diets and prescribed some medicines also.

Ludhiana, 7th December, 2013: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen): A continuing medical education (CME) programme on Infectious diseases was conducted in Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMC), Ludhiana on December 7. The CME was jointly organized by the Departments of Medicine and Microbiology of CMC, Ludhiana. Dr. Abraham G Thomas, Director of CMC was the Chief Guest. Along with him, Dr. Karamveer Goyal, President of Local Indian Medical Association, Dr. S.M. Bhatti, Principal of CMC, Dr. Kanwal Masih, Medical Superintendant, CMC, Dr. Kim J Mammen, Associate Director, CMC inaugurated the CME officially. A total of 170 delegates from different parts of Punjab attended the meeting.

The participants in this CME included distinguished faculty members from different medical colleges, specialists in district hospital and other government hospitals, medical officers and private practitioners from the state of Punjab. The aim of this update was to improve the understanding of common infectious diseases relevant to clinical practice and interpretation of microbiological results. The meeting was accredited with two hours by the Punjab Medical Council.

Dr. Aroma Oberoi, Head of the Department of Microbiology spoke on the topic “Role of a clinical microbiologist in the present era of pan drug resistant bugs and no drugs”. She mentioned the importance of clinical microbiologists in tackling the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Mrs. Shereen Rachel Varghese from the department of Microbiology educated the audience on the various mechanisms of drug resistance.

Dr. Mary John, Head of the department of Medicine gave a talk on “Antibiotic Stewardship”. In this talk, she stressed on the need to have an antibiotic stewardship programme in the hospitals to prevent the emergence of drug resistance. Dr. Jency Koshy from the Department of Medicine spoke on “Pre-ART work up in HIV infection”, in which she educated the audience on the importance of work up before starting antiretroviral therapy. Dr. Divya Deodhar fom the Department of Medicine talked on “Syndromic approach to Acute Undifferentiated Fevers”. She gave an overview of the clinical diagnosis of undifferentiated fevers.

Dr. Sanjay Rajpal from New Delhi spoke on newer diagnostic methods in Tuberculosis, in which he updated the audience on the newer tests for the diagnosis of Tuberculosis. The delegates actively participated by asking questions to the speakers. The scientific sessions were chaired by eminent Professors from CMC like Dr. Anna Mani, Dr. Nitin Malhotra, Dr.Vandana Berry and Dr. Chanchal Gera. The in-charge of the scientific session was Dr. Vipin Sam Alexander. The Masters of ceremony were Dr. Eshani Dewan and Dr. Chris Baby. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Sangeetha Mohan from CMC. As per the delegates, the CME was a very enriching and educational feast.

India is facing the emergence of a “hidden” epidemic:disability

Ludhiana, 17th November, 2013: (Shalu Arora  and Rector Kathuria): India, the world’s second most populous country, is facing the emergence of a “hidden” epidemic: disability due to neurologic diseases. The rapid economic, demographic, and social transformation of India in recent decades has already resulted in the double burden of unresolved epidemics of infectious diseases (e.g., malaria, tuberculosis) coupled with rising rates of chronic diseases (e.g., stroke, heart attack). This was stated by Professor Gourie Devi, former Director and Vice-Chancellor of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore in the 31st Dr LH Lobo memorial oration. She said stroke, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injuries due to road traffic accidents are the major causes of disability in India.  She spoke also about the delivery of neurological services at different levels of care in India.

Dr LH Lobo memorial trust, Ludhiana has been organizing the Dr LH Lobo Memorial Oration and Scientific symposium for the last 30 years, in memory of the late Dr LH Lobo, an eminent and renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon and Former Head of Orthopaedic department and Principal of Christian Medical College (CMC), Ludhiana.   This year the 31st Dr LH Lobo Memorial Oration was organised by the department of Neurology, CMC on November 16th in the hospital auditorium. The inaugural function and the oration were conducted by Shri Sukhpat Rai Wadehra, President, Dr LH Lobo Memorial Trust and Dr MK Mahajan, Secretary, Padma Bhushan Prof JS Chopra, from Chandigarh was the Guest of Honour. Dr S Chopra gave the vote of thanks.

After the oration a CME on ”Management of Central Nervous System Infections” was organised by the department of Neurology, CMC Ludhiana. Prof Satishchandra Director and Vice-Chancellor of NIMHANS Bangalore gave a talk on the neurological manifestations in HIV patients.  Dr S Prabhakar, Head of Neurology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, updated the audience on the recent management of Bacterial meningitis. Prof Mathew Alexander HOD, Dept of Neurology, CMC Vellore spoke about the brain infection following measles virus. Prof Gourie Devi discussed about the various types of TB infection that can affect the brain.

Prof Yashpal Singh briefly talked about the common viral infection of the brain called Herpes simplex encephalitis. Prof Gagandeep Singh discussed various treatment options for Neurocysticercosis(tape worm) affecting the brain. Dr Jency Koshy gave a lecture on neurological complications that can occur due to Dengue fever. Dr DivyaDeodhar spoke about the current treatment of TB infection affecting the brain. Dr Vikas Loomba talked about the emerging infection called Scrub Typhus and its neurological manifestations. A PG Quiz on the Neuroinfections was held during the program. More than 200 delegates attended the program. A CME on Thalassemia Awareness by the ICMR

Ludhiana, 16th January, 2013 (Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria):A CME on Thalassemia Awareness and Role of Molecular Genetics sponsored by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi was conducted on the 16^th of January 2013 at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana. The CME was attended by over 250 delegates which included Gynaecologists and Paeditricians from the Ludhiana city, including CMC Faculty.

Honorable Civil surgeon Dr.Subash Batta, was the Chief Guest, and Dr.K.Ghosh, Director, NIIH, Mumbai was the Guest of Honor, Dr.R.Colah, Dy Director, NIIH, Mumbai, Professor Vijay Obed, Dy Director, Prof.S.M.Bhatti, Pricipal, Prof. K.Masih, Medical Superintendent were also present.

The program was on generating awareness on the various aspects of Thalassemia, advancements in management and preventive strategies which included molecular diagnostics and prenatal diagnosis. The welcome address was given by Prof. Sheila Das, Principal Investigator, ICMR Thalassemia Molecular Genetics Project, Dr.K.Ghosh spoke on Why awareness of Thalassemia is necessary, Dr.R.Colah gave introduction of Molecular Genetics in Thalassemia and CVS study, Dr.Ranjeet S.Mashon, Research Scientist, ICMR Thalassemia Molecular Genetics Project gave a brief report of CMC experience in molecular genetics in Hemoglobinopathies, Ms. Geetanjali spoke on Awareness and Family sstudy in Antenatal women, Dr. Atul Goel, Assoc. Prof, Paediatrics spoke on challenges on managing a child with Thalassemia and Dr. J.John spoke on Bone Marrow Transplant in Thalassemia Children CMC experience.The CME was concluded by a vote of Thanks by Dr.Sheila Das.

It has been found by Dr Sheila Das & her Team in a previous ICMR Research Project by CMC Ludhiana that 3.5 – 5 % were carriers of Beta Thal Major in the general population while in some casts like Aroras , Khatris , Ramgariah Sikhs , Jains the prevalence was 4.8% - 9.1% and in Migrants from West Pak the prevalence was 8.3%.

All pregnant ladies during their first 3 months of Pregnancy are requested to come forward to CMC to get their blood screened for Beta Thalassemia, as this is the only center in Punjab to provide this facility as the ICMR Thalassemia Lab CMC Ludhiana is fully equipped with machines costing  Rs 75-80 lakhs sponsored by ICMR New Delhi .                                                        (Wed, Jan 16, 2013 at 5:11 PM

Tightening of Norms of Clinical Trials

Rules are made or amended by the Central Government in consultation with the Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) as per the provisions of the Drugs & Cosmetics  Act, 1940 and the Drugs & Cosmetics Rules, 1945.  A Statement containing various steps taken / being taken for strengthening of the provisions for conduct of clinical trials in the country is annexed.

Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) headed by the Drug Controller General (India) [DCG(I)] has six zonal offices and four sub-zonal offices in  different parts of the country for undertaking various activities as per the provisions of Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules made thereunder, including overseeing clinical trials of new drugs conducted by the drug companies.Annexure
           The following measures have so far been taken by the Government for strengthening the regulatory provisions for clinical trials in the country:
a) MEASURES TAKEN TO STRENGTHEN REGULATION OF CLINICAL TRIALS:
Ø  12 New Drug Advisory Committees (NDAC) consisting of experts from the government medical colleges, institutes from all over the country have been constituted. Fresh applications of clinical trial proposals of new drug substances excluding Investigation New Drugs (INDs) are being evaluated by these Committees.
Ø  All IND applications are evaluated by the IND committees.  
Ø  Registration of clinical trial in ICMR registry has been made mandatory since 15.6.2009.
Ø  Every approval / permission for conducting clinical trials now includes a condition that in case of study related injury or death, applicant will provide complete medical care as well as compensation for the injury or death and statement to this effect should be incorporated in the informed consent form. Further in case of such injury or death, the details of compensation provided should be intimated to the office of DCG (I).
Ø  Guidelines for conducting Clinical Trial inspection of site and sponsor / Clinical Research Organisations (CRO) have been prepared and posted on the website of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).b)     MEASURES BEING TAKEN TO STRENGTHEN REGULATION OF CLINICAL TRIALS
1.      Draft Rule and guidelines and requirement for registration of CRO have already been notified.  
2.      Draft rules for incorporation / amendments of following proposals in Drugs and Cosmetics Rules related to clinical trials have been notified.:
Ø  To incorporate a new rule for provisions for payment of compensation in case of clinical trial related injury or death
Ø  To incorporate New Appendix in Schedule-Y mentioning the procedures and methods of providing compensation.
·         Compensation will be borne by the sponsor or his representative.
·         Sponsor or his representative shall prove before the Ethics Committee that the injury or death is not due to clinical trial within 30 days; failing which they shall be liable to provide the compensation within 60 days as decided by the Ethics Committee.·         Claims made by the subject shall be settled within 90 days.
Ø  To amend the informed consent format to capture the details of address, qualification and occupation, and annual income of the subject.
Ø  To amend patient information sheet to mention that the applicant will provide compensation in case of trial related injury or death.
Ø  To expand responsibilities of investigators to ensure that:
·         The investigator informs the trial subject about his / her rights to claim compensation in case of in trial related injuries on death. ·         Information is provided about the contact details of representatives of Sponsors / CRO and Ethics Committee.
Ø  To expand the responsibilities of Sponsor:
·         Sponsor shall make payment for treatment and also provide compensation.·         The details of compensation provided shall be submitted to the DCG (I) within 90 days.
3.      Following proposals to amend the provisions of Drugs and Cosmetics Rules related to clinical trials have been considered and approved by DTAB.:
Ø  To incorporate Rule
·         To have authority for clinical trial inspection by CDSCO assisted by concerned state authority.·         To take administrative actions like suspension / cancellation of clinical trial permission, restriction of investigator, sponsor / CRO to conduct future clinical trial in case of non-compliance.
Ø  Registration of Ethics Committee
·         To incorporate Rules and Schedule  Y- 2 for registration of Ethics Committee –
·         Quantity of compensation in case of trial related injury or death to be decided by Ethics Committee as per prescribed Guidelines.Ø  To incorporate amendment in Schedule-Y specifying that clinical trials are required to be conducted at sites which have their own Ethics Committee. However, for conduct of Bio-availability & Bio-equivalence study of drug approved in the country and / or elsewhere (for new drug approval purpose), Ethics Committee approval may be obtained from Independent Ethics Committee of same areas where the site is located.

9th Ophthalmic Quiz Organized at CMC

1st prize winner-Pushkar Dhir, Samson Charan

Ludhiana, 15th September, 2012 (Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria) The Department of Ophthalmology, Christian Medical College and Hospital successfully organized the 9th Ophthalmic Quiz for undergraduate medical students in the hospital auditorium. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Dr.A.G.Thomas, Director, CMC & Hospital. He encouraged the participating teams and appreciated the efforts of the department in making this academic venture a much awaited annual feature of the institution.
Among the 30 Undergraduate teams, 4 teams had qualified for the quiz following the preliminary round. Dr.Nitin Batra and Dr.Gurvinder conducted the final.   1st prize winner- PUSHKAR DHIR, SAMSON CHARAN &   2nd prize winner- JIBI JOHN, ANKITA RAISINGHANI (Batch of 2007 and 2009) won the champions trophy.

Dr.S.M. Bhatti, Principal CMC, was the guest of honor and presented a special Award for 100% attendance to George Koshy (Batch of 2009). Rohit Theodore (Batch of 2009) presented an interesting talk titled ‘Hall of Fame’, which gave a brief history of legendary Ophthalmologists.

Dr Joginder Dayal critisised the Punjab Government

This is making mockery of the medical education

Dr Joginder Dayal Member Central Executive Committee Communist Party of India (CPI) has critisised the decision of cabinet Punjab Government to allow the Private Medical Colleges to admit the NRI candidates on their own will. The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences was took conduct this admission. According to a press note issued by Dr Arun Mitra Astt. Secretary CPI Distt. Ludhiana It appears that the government has connived with the Private Medical Colleges. It is unfortunate that both central and the state government have taken their hands off.  Health care and medical education and left it to the private institution to sell.  He demanded that the decision of the Punjab government revoked and the admission should conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health Science. It is a known fact to everyone that most of their private medical colleges are charging hefty amounts as under hand money for the admission in both under graduate and post graduate courses. This amount some subject is more than one crore. This is making mockery of the medical education and health care. According to Indian constitution the reservation has to be given only to those who come from socially, economically educationally and culturally backward back ground. But it is the economically well off section who is being given benefits.
