Summer Vacation an opportunity to horn certain life skills

Summer is the time for children to take time off from their regular chores of  school and  curriculum. So, the summer vacation is, in another way, an opportunity to horn certain life skills while they are sitting at home safely protecting themselves during the pandemic and having fun. Children in their early years are in the molding stage. Right skills imparted now can help them shape their future. 

A week long virtual summer camp was organized by Drishti Dr. R. C Jain Innovative Public School, for the students of grade Nursery to  IX . The kids carnival began on June 7 with the opening ceremony  that was flooded with enthusiasm of the kids. The principal Ms. Gauri Chhabra welcomed the children and motivated them to be 21st century prodigy. The children participated group wise in a plethora of activities like art and craft, video making, mental maths, stitching, dance , clay modelling , science experiments, and public speaking. The closing ceremony was conducted by the parents where they thanked the teachers and management for tireless efforts and concern for the children.

Three day virtual event Econovista at GCG

The Planning Forum Society and Consumer Forum Society of Government College for Girls, Ludhiana organized Econovista-a three day virtual event comprising of various activities such as essay writing, slogan writing, Quiz and Extempore under the aegis of Principal, Dr.Sukhwinder Kaur. The event was commenced by a warm welcome to the Principal, Dr. Sukhwinder Kaur and other esteemed guests. While addressing, Principal Dr. Sukhwinder Kaur said these type of competitions can be successful only if students put their hard work and dedication to it. She further enlightened the students with her words of wisdom and motivated all the students to take part in these type of competitions to stay in touch with the ongoing issues of our economy.

On the first day Slogan writing and Essay writing competition were held in which more than 60 students participated with full zeal and fervor. On the following day of the competition, an interactive quiz was organized by Inayat and Shivani of Planning Forum. On the third and Final day of the virtual event,  Extempore competition was held among the qualified students from the previous two rounds. PowerPoint Presentations were also presented by the presidents of both planning forum and consumer forum. Students displayed impeccable oratory creative and scholarly skills in the four activities.The topics from current economic problems such as Inflation, Effects of Covid-19 on the economy, Role and Importance of E-commerce and New Education Policy were covered in the essay writing competition.

The judges of the event were Dr Jaspreet Kaur of Home Science Department and Dr Tarunpreet of Botany Department. 

Principal, Dr. Sukhwinder Kaur congratulated all the winners and encouraged them to participate in such events in future too.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Gurmeet Singh from the Department of Economics who also explained the importance of these type of competitions for the exposure of students.

The World Environment Day was celebrated by the GCG

The World Environment Day was celebrated by the Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana. Post Graduate Department of Botany organized a webinar. The webinar began with the introductory remarks by the Principal of the college Dr. Sukhwinder Kaur. She introduced the students to the theme of this year “Ecosystem Restoration”, stressing the need for the same. She even made a short awareness video on the above theme, so that her message could reach all the students. 

Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal from Department of Botanical & Environmental Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar acted as the resource person. She delivered a talk on the topic “Planting Trees: An Important Tool to save Environment & Ourselves”. She discussed various reasons of environment degradation and how to fix responsibilities for the same. Prof. Avinash also discussed about various factors responsible for ecosystem degradation and the ways to mitigate those factors and restore the ecosystems. She shared her experiences regarding creating eDOPS, an electronic Database of Plants. This database serves the dual purpose of providing data cum multimedia information of each plant species. The Focus of the database is to provide information about Botanical name, Popular/Common name, Family name, flowering time, Fruiting time, Distribution, Economic importance, Morphological description and photographs of different views/parts of each plant. The database can be searched using different search options- plant wise and family wise. At the end she even shared a short informative video regarding “Miawaki Forests”. The lecture was followed by the queries and curious questions by the students.
